Converting “Bullet Time” to 3D

Another one from the WIP pile. Someone was asking me ages ago how 3D TV’s work and for some reason this idea popped into my head (though I’ve put up the anaglyph version rather than the side-by-side version on the assumption that anyone who stumbles across this is more likely to have a pair to hand. Also I’ve been meaning to do something with anaglyph video since stumbling across a BYTE article detailing how it works from about 1982…). You’ll need red-cyan glasses for this (red/blue will probably also work but you’ll lose the green channel) :

The idea is that while tracking right, for instance, the frame for the right eye should contain the image of a slightly later frame than the left. If nothing else is moving in the scene we should have images for both the left eye and right eye showing the target from slightly different angles – enough to give us an image that will appear three-dimensional. I am chuffed (and also slightly relieved) that this actually works … The image is from the trailer BTW (hence the crap quality) – so I assume fair use (don’t sue me Universal!). EDIT : The video isn’t currently displaying for some reason – investigating why … Here’s a link to the file in the meantime : https://davegorst.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/mtx.mp4

EDIT : And it turns out I’d managed to lose a channel anyway, due to a typo n my code. Fixed in Github now. Will re-upload when I get a chance..
